Mages of the Tricore - Page 7 Empty Re: Mages of the Tricore

Kleis ran over to the faucet and let the cold water wash over her burnt hands. She took a bowl and filled it up, then added ice to it. She carefully brought it back to the table, and swiftly picked up the diadem and placed it in the bowl. The ice immediately began to melt and vapor rose from the bowl. Reyna appeared to stir in her sleep, sweating heavily. Kleis frowned a glanced over at Von, asking to check if it was still raining outside.

Von cracked open the door of the cottage, immediately being hit by the hot, moist air. It had definitely stopped raining, but the acid rain did a number on the forest. The trees were almost bare, and only the proof of life was the sound of crickets.

Kleis then looked over at Emirayha, telling her to find something in her satchel, which was placed by the bed Reyna rested in. She asked her to look for a hose and something large enough so they can submerge the Teardrop Mage in water.

The heat radiating from the diadem surmounted the frigidity of ice cold water, evaporating it almost immediately. Reyna seemed to be uncomfortably snoozing in the bed, shaking and sweating intensely.

The acid rain had ceased, but its effects sat as conspicuous as ever on the now barren forestland; it had been unforgiving and merciless.

Emirayha began drifting off at the sight of the forests remains until Kleis asked her to find something in her satchel as well as a hose and a tub big enough to submerge Reyna in water.

She dug through the satchel tenaciously until she found what she was looking for.

The buttons that held the satchel closed appeared to stare at Emirayha, watching her every move. When she opened the satchel, she would have seen large, white teeth, which was actually a zipper. Satchel unzipped himself, allowing her to explore the dark dimension that is his stomach. He blinked, realizing what they wanted, and squirmed out of Emirayha’s hands, regurgitating a small bathtub and a rubber hose.

Kleis sighed and smiled, although one can see the pain in her expression. “He’s a weird one, isn’t he? He was my sister’s familiar.”

Von’s head perked up at the mention of Kleis’s sister. “Kara? I thought she left years ago-” His words reached deaf ears, as Kleis tuned him out and began to fill the tub with water.

As Emirayha was delving through the bag, to her surprise, it came to life and spat out exactly what she was looking for.

Shocked, Emirayha silently jumped back after taking the tub and the hose. Kleis informed her that the bag was her sister's familiar. Then she wasn't surprised.

Once the tub was full, Kleis picked up the Teardrop Mage and lowered her into the water, making sure that the water completely covered her. The girl appeared to be just fine underwater: no signs of drowning or anything. Kleis added more ice to the diadem, seeing that most of the water had evaporated already.

She searched through the cupboards, pulling out three plates and some silverware. She glanced over at Emirayha and Von, as if inviting them to eat. Von got the message and took a slice of cheesecake and waited for Emirayha to do the same. Every time he came over to talk about serious stuff, it was always over some sort of cake. He’ll wait for them to eat a little before asking any questions.

Kleis submerged Reyna in the frigid water, adding more ice as the water rapidly evaporated. Underwater, Reyna appeared as peaceful as ever-- completely oblivious to the harsh events that had not long ago occurred.

After adding a copious amount of ice, Kleis offered Von and Emirayha some cake. Emirayha was surprised, but she accepted slowly and gratefully, trying to hide her anxiousness to get at the delicious cake. It had been a while since she had eaten. Taking a large chunk out of the cake while still using her etiquette, she awaited for something serious to be addressed. Cake always eased the mood; after an event like that, it would be the perfect way to start a conversation.

After they all managed to get a bite, Von looked up at Kleis and asked his question. “So…”
“So what?”
“What is Esse anyway? And the Tricore shards?”
Kleis sighed and put down her spoon. Tabula rasa. It’s the idea that humans are born with a ‘blank slate’, right? You’ve been paying attention in school, haven’t you?”
Von smiled and twitched. He hasn’t gone to school in almost a month, he’s been so busy with his Mage duties. “Um…sure.”
The Dragonfly Mage rolled her eyes and flicked the boy’s forehead. “You won’t stay a Mage forever! You’ll need to find something to do after you grow up.” She stood up and put a kettle on the stove, boiling water for some tea. “Unless you find a Tricore shard, of course.”

Kleis and Von began discussing ideas like Esse, Tabula rasa, and the Tricore shard. Emirayha was doing decent in school when it came to magic-related things, so none of it surprised her until she heard what Kleis said about the tricore shard. She couldn't recall hearing that before. Could getting one mean....?
"So what happens if you get a tricore shard?" Emirayha asked, intrigued.

“When you get a Tricore Shard, three things can happen. If you use it right, then you’ll just eventually turn back to normal with no side effects. But if you go crazy with it, it branches off from there.” The kettle on the stove squealed, shooting steam from its nozzle. Kleis turned the stove off and pulled some tea cups from the cupboard. “What type of tea do you like?”
“Prince of Wales, please,” Von said almost immediately. He loved the mix of Chinese tea.
Kleis giggled. “Very classy.” She pulled a little box from the cupboard, along with a teapot. She brought it to the table and put some tea leaves inside before adding the water. She continued to speak while the tea brewed.
“If you use a Tricore Shard incorrectly, the spirits inside will become restless and try to take over. If they do manage to take over, then the Mage will undergo a complete transformation.”

“Yes. It’ll activate a new form for the Mage, apparently. But that’s about as far as I got with my research.” Kleis got a sugar bowl and placed it on the table before pouring the tea for the three of them.
Von added an awful lot of sugar and asked for some maple syrup. “Does this have anything to do with the Reapers that have been showing up?”
The Dragonfly Mage shrugged and fetched some maple syrup for the boy. “It might, I’m not quite sure.”

Emirayha calmly grabbed the tea and poured meager amounts of sugar into it so that it was just bitter enough and just sweet enough. She pondered all the evens that had occurred with fascination.
"You seem to have a far ways to go. How may I help with research?" She asked anxiously.

"Not much, unless you know German," Kleis said before carefully sipping her tea. "I'm well off on my own."
Von took a long sip, glancing over at Reyna. "What about the Teardrop Mage? And the forest?"
"Just let worry about the forest. And Reyna has contacts at the hospital, I'm certain that they'll be happy to take care of her." Although she sounded confident in the words, her eyes appeared to soften when she spoke of the state of the forest.

It was obvious that Kleis was disappointed by the condition of the forest, but she was being too stoic to show any emotion. Emirayha couldn't help her, so she just sat silently awaiting the dock of the next ship of conversation, floating atop the assuaging sea of warm tea and cool, delicious cream cheese. Emirayha took another moment to savor her cheesecake and began moving her dirty plate and cup off the table once she was finished,

Once everyone had finished eating, Kleis picked up all the dirty plates and dumped them in the sink before checking on Reyna’s diadem. She cautiously picked it up, studying the gem. It wasn’t searing hot like before, but it was still warm to touch. The gem was still a bright red color, however.
“I think she may have been possessed by a Fire Mage,” Kleis said. She jumped and abruptly dropped the diadem back into its bowl, for it had flared up again and added some new burns to her hand. She cursed under her breath and headed to the sink to cool her burn.

'Fire Mage? That's it no doubt, what else would make more sense?' Emirayha thought to herself. "I agree, that must be it." She said aloud. "Looking at those burns on your hands, that'd be my first choice. But why would a Fire Mage summon acid rain?"

Von sighed and took a quick glance outside, realizing how late it was. "May I use your phone?"
"Go ahead," Kleis said, handing him her cellphone. "Calling your grandpa?" The Ink Mage nodded in reply. "Tell him that I said hi."

When Von finished his call, he left to head back to the old factory. Kleis sighed and checked on Reyna once again. Her diadem was now a reddish-purple. "It seems to be doing the trick...but it's very slow."

Kleis gave Emirayha a quick nod, grabbed Satchel, and headed out to patrol. The Reapers hadn't gone past the borders of the forest, so there wasn't much to deal with. She surveyed the damage: most of the shrubbery and insect nests were destroyed by the rain. But, the deeper she went into the forest, the healthier it appeared, although almost all of trees were still completely bare.
There was one tree that somehow managed to survive, hidden deep in the forest. Kleis could only guess why. She pulled out her necklace and let a single Esse escape from it and enter the tree. Graves of Mages rose up around its roots, with a special item decorating each headstone. Kleis treaded carefully around the graves and quickly looted one of them before giving the tree another Esse to hide them.
Kleis returned back to the cottage a little bit after midnight. Reyna still hadn’t woken up yet.
