"...No, of course I'm not happy," Tom replied after a second. "I can understand why you feel the way you do. But I don't see, and I'm being honest here, not just saying this to make you feel better, I really don't see how this makes you not deserve life."

"I killed my sister and abandoned my brother when he couldn't take care of himself. I was the oldest, it was my responsibility to take care of them! I was stupid enough to think that if I took care of Simon, then maybe Benji would be okay, but I was lying to myself," Heidi responded bitterly, resisting the urge to make a comment on how "of course Tom couldn't see."

"The way you just told it, your sister killed herself. I've seen dozens of people commit suicide in this world, and it's not anyone's fault, it just is. You were what, twelve, and you think you could handle the responsibility of a comatose brother after having your little sister commit suicide, your world turned upside down, and getting a new crazy power? No one handled that well, I guarantee you, not one person in the wasteland, and they only had to deal with the latter two," Tom replied, knowing how stubborn Heidi was.

Heidi laughed hollowly. "If I could have stopped the bleeding, she wouldn't have died. She may have stabbed herself, but I could have saved her if I wasn't so damn weak! And Benji, I could have taken care of him. Anything would be better than him being alone."

"Yes, it does," Heidi answered, looking up slightly to glare at Tom, even if he couldn't see it. "How many times has it been said? I'm weak and pathetic. I can't control my damn Flow, and because of it, Mary's dead, and Benji probably is too!" Her voice rose to a shout towards the end, anger rising in her voice.

"Well, I can't argue with that," Tom replied, slightly annoyed himself and his snark showing. "Killing yourself because of the fact that you, and you alone, can't forgive yourself for a mistake you think you made, and for a possible outcome for another perceived mistake you made six years ago, that sounds fantastic."

Heidi fell silent. Tom didn't understand. Maybe it would be better for her to die, so she didn't have to torture herself daily like this. He didn't understand.

Heidi pushed herself to her feet, standing still, hanging her head. Somehow she thought she'd feel better if she told Tom, but that obviously wasn't the case. He was just as ashamed of her as she was herself.

Tom was cursing his blindness more than ever. It had been many years since the tower where he was wholly blind, but with his mind and Flow a bit under strain, he was beginning to feel the same helplessness.

Nathan walked out to where the flow had dropped and frowned. There, nestled in the sand and water was a beautiful gem that seemed to be set in solid gold.

He picked it in his hand and felt power radiate from it. One glance at it with full IA in use caused him to pull his head back and look at it in awe. This... can't be... I-it... With this... Luke... and... even Heidi...

The gem was put under even scrutiny as Nathan used adult level IA to preform complete analysis.
